Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water

For the Chocolate Ganache

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped

For the Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prepare
    Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch cake pans.
  • Make the Batter
    In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.In another bowl, mix eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Slowly add to the dry ingredients.Stir in hot water until smooth.
  • Bake the Cake
    Divide batter evenly among the prepared pans.Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.Let cakes cool completely.
  • Prepare the Ganache
    Heat heavy cream until simmering, then pour over chopped dark chocolate. Let sit for 2 minutes, then whisk until smooth.
  • Make the Frosting
    Beat butter until fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder.Pour in heavy cream and vanilla, beating until smooth.
  • Assemble the Cake
    Spread a layer of ganache between each cake layer.Frost the entire cake with chocolate frosting.Drizzle with extra ganache and decorate as desired.
